Description

Thank you for your interest in an art studio/workspace at the Santa Monica Airport!

The Santa Monica Airport has a rich history as the former home of the Douglas Aircraft Company and the birthplace of the DC-3 and has been home to notable artists dating back to the 1950s. The Airport now houses the largest concentration of artists in Santa Monica, comprising 60 art studios and creative spaces across four airplane hangars and additional buildings. These studios are a cultural asset to the city, ensuring artists can continue to have a presence in the city and creating an arts campus that draws local and regional visitors.

Artists Impacted by Los Angeles Wildfires

Our priority is to provide stability for Los Angeles County artists/arts organizations experiencing immediate hardship due to the fires.

In response to the devasting Palisades and Eaton fires, and the significant financial hardships caused by this federally recognized "qualified disaster," we will be prioritizing artists:

  • who have lost their homes or artmaking studios
  • whose homes or artmaking studios have severe damage
  • who have lack or limited access to their home, artmaking studio, or both

Criteria for Review

Artists and/or arts organizations that:

  • are based in or would be engaging with the Santa Monica community will be highly considered.
  • have professional experience in a medium/service.
  • will actively utilize the space for their arts practice or services for at least 30 hours a week.
  • agree to foster respectful interactions with the other studio artists, and Cultural Affairs and Airport Administration staff, and that will participate in larger community events with the Airport Arts Center.
  • practice an artistic medium or offers an arts service that diversifies the existing range of disciplines/services.
